Jews and Slavery, Abolition, and the Civil War

  • For the 150th anniversary of the Civil War, we’ll examine the role that Jews played in the Civil War.  This session will examine American Jewry before and after the first wave of German Jewish immigration began in 1848, Jews and slavery in the Ante-Bellum South, Jewish abolitionists, rabbinical sermons at the beginning of the war, the struggle to allow rabbis to serve as chaplains in the Union army, Jews serving in the Union Army, and General Grant’s expulsion of the Jews and how he spent the rest of his life seeking forgiveness.
